Physical Activity for Weight Management: Evidence-Based Guidelines

The role of physical activity in weight management is often misunderstood. Here’s what the research actually shows.

The Evidence

According to the American College of Sports Medicine position stand, exercise alone produces modest weight loss of about 2 to 3 kg. However, it is crucial for weight maintenance and offers numerous health benefits.

Australian Physical Activity Guidelines

For adults aged 18 to 64, the guidelines recommend:

  • 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity exercise or

  • 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise each week

  • Engaging in muscle strengthening activities on two or more days each week

  • Minimising sedentary time

Exercise and Weight Loss Research

A systematic review in Obesity Reviews (2021) found:

  • Aerobic exercise can lead to a 1 to 3% reduction in body weight

  • Resistance training helps preserve muscle mass

  • Combined training provides the best overall outcomes

  • High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is time-efficient and yields similar results

Practical Implementation

  • Start where you are; even 10 minutes of activity counts

  • Progress gradually, aiming for a 10% increase in activity each week

  • Include a variety of exercises to prevent boredom

  • Prioritise consistency over intensity

  • Track your activity levels, not just weight
